Greater Manchester native Joseph Rees Gara has qualified for the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games 1500m final. The semi-final took place on Monday evening in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago’s capital city, where the seventh edition of the games are being held.
In the humid late afternoon heat of the Caribbean summer, Rees Gara was able to record a stellar time of 4:11.84. He was 23 seconds off the pace of the leader, Kenya’s Jospat Sang Kipkirui, but did enough to qualify for Tuesday’s final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
It was a very close call for Rees Gara, who finished just one second ahead of Daniel Williams of Australia. Rees Gara is no stranger to athletic competition.
The 17-year-old recently competed in the under-20s category of the England Athletic Open Championships, recording a personal best of 3:53.39 in his favored 1500m.
