Widow's anguish as husband who took his own life refused place on war memorial

The widow of a veteran who took his own life has lost her battle to have his name placed on a war memorial at the National Arboretum.

Jo Jukes, 48, of Birmingham, hoped her late husband’s name would be added to the Armed Forces Memorial after a coroner ruled his suicide was due to his military service.

The memorial records the names of 16,000 people who died on active service since 1948. Dave Jukes, an Iraq war veteran who had PTSD, died in 2018.

Jo applied to the Ministry of Defence to have his name memorialised, but her request was rejected. A letter from the Armed Forces Memorial Name Inclusion Panel said: “It was the conclusion of the panel that there was insufficient evidence David’s sad death was directly attributable to his military
