Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

Bonfire Night is right around the corner. The UK skies will soon to be lit up by bonfires and firework displays. Many pubs, clubs, parks and other venues are preparing to put on some massive shows.

Events tend to have a giant bonfire with a fireworks display, among other activities such as live music, food and drink and carnival rides. READ MORE: But where does this national holiday actually come from?

Unlike Christmas or Easter, Bonfire Night's roots aren't found in religion. It marks the attempted assassination of a British king - the Gunpowder Plot.

What is now known as the Gunpowder Plot was first initiated by a man named Guy Fawkes. He planned to blow up the House of Lords - with King James I inside - way back on November 5, 1605.
