The designer passed away on February 19, 2019, in Paris, France, at the age of 85. The exact cause of his death was not disclosed at the time, but it was reported that he had been ill for several weeks prior to his passing. Sébastien Jondeau, Karl Lagerfeld’s longtime bodyguard and personal assistant, later wrote in his book about the designer’s battle with pancreatic cancer in great detail.
