'While The Masked Dancer’s costumes have legs, its format clearly doesn’t'

There was only one real surprise when that llama skipped on to the stage of The Masked Dancer this week. That no one from ITV ran on after it and tried to milk it.

Milking things is what ITV does best, of course. Which is why it ploughed ahead with this spin-off, even though the US version did not perform as well as was hoped in the key markets. (That’s US telly speak for flopped bigly).

Needs must though. Thanks to Britain’s Got Talent’s Covid-enforced absence, ITV had a week of half-term primetime to fill – and the advertisers wanted something similarly light.

With two nights to go, I’m guessing Simon Cowell is already considering upping his price for BGT. Because, while The Masked Dancer’s costumes have legs, its format clearly doesn’t.
