Hearts sporting director Joe Savage admitted that in signing players from Japan, the club are opening up a new market. The priority however, will always be whether new recruits can cut the mustard in maroon.

Robbie Neilson said as much himself when taking questions on latest signing Yutaro Oda. The club have hired an interpreter to ease him into life in the capital, and he’ll be living close to his teammates to ensure he settles in as quickly as possible.

All the off-field work is geared towards making sure the 21-year-old is given the best possible chance of succeeding on it. The Jambos paid a fee for the Japanese Under-21 international, and have shown their commitment with a long-term contract.

A return in terms of performances will be expected, even if there’s a bit of leeway initially given the magnitude of the move made by what is still a young man.
