The first “Yellowstone” spinoff followed a previous generation of the Dutton family, living post-Civil War. It starred Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Sam Elliott.
The story explored how the Duttons came to own the land that became their famous ranch. The Emmy-nominated show premiered in 2021 and was initially renewed for a Season 2, but it killed off many of the characters, and creator Taylor Sheridan said he didn’t plan for it to last multiple seasons. “When [Paramount execs] read the last episode of 1883, I don’t think they digested what had just happened, even though I made it quite clear from the very beginning,” Sheridan told Deadline in 2022.
According to the Dallas Morning News, studio execs met with Sheridan and asked him to create a Season 2 as if the major character deaths hadn’t happened.
