Tuesday December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, an annual event that began in 1992. The United Nations (UN) recognises this day to promote awareness and support for the "dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities'.
It covers a variety of issues that it believes are important to people with disabilities, including political, social, economic, and cultural issues.
Each year, the day focuses on a different issue. For 2024 (the 31st year of celebration), the day aims to focus on "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future." This focus is divided into five main areas. According to the UN, this year's theme aims to recognise - "The important role that persons with disabilities play in creating a more inclusive and sustainable world for all.
It also emphasises the importance of the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes that affect their lives. "The theme this year reflects the current international political and policy context, in particular the Pact for the Future and the upcoming 2025 World Summit for Social Development, and the need to create momentum for achieving the 2030 Agenda.
