Yossman. Before mid-afternoon on Jan. 7, the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles was a salt-air oasis tucked into the second-largest city in the country.

It was “a kind of Mayberry,” in the words of one resident, that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, lying between Santa Monica to the east and Malibu to the west.

By late afternoon that day, the Palisades had turned into an unimaginable hellscape. The community that had long been home to hundreds of entertainment industry workers was engulfed by a wildfire whipped into a merciless inferno by 80-mile an hour winds.
