Blue Peter was created to fill a six-week gap in scheduling, but ended up becoming the longest running children's show in the world.
It was designed to take kids on a voyage - hence the ship logo - and it's been doing just that since 1958. TV artist Tony Hart was the man behind the logo, receiving £100 for his work – about £1,500 today - but he would be a millionaire if he received royalties.
Since it first hit our screens, Blue Peter has had 37 presenters who have explained the news to generations of children, shown them arts and crafts and inspired them to take up new hobbies.
