Day trippers who went to the seaside to bask in the hottest weather of the year ended up getting trapped in mud in the searing heat.

Some of the tourists were seen carrying small children in their arms as they struggled to free themselves and walk back to the shore during low tide in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

One image shows a woman holding a young child as she appears exhausted and covered in mud while sat on top of the soft and swampy flat.

Costguards were called in to rescue some of the beachgoers from 'Weston-super-Mud'. A witness told SomersetLive that more than 100 people had made their way across the mud flat in a bid to reach the water to cool off, but many decided to turn back because it was such a struggle to walk.
