West Lothian yobs smashed fire engine windscreen window last night. There were no injuries reported after the appliance in West Lothian had a windscreen smashed by a brick in Bathgate and had to be removed from operational service. It came amid a weekend of carnage that saw firefighters attacked with petrol bombs in Edinburgh.Attacks on first responders have been branded “reckless” and a “drain on resources” by SFRS Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Garry Mackay.

He said: “The safety of our firefighters and the people of Scotland is always our number one priority.“The Bonfire period is one the busiest spells for our staff and our emergency service partners and we have robust plans in place to ensure we can respond effectively where needed.“We will have the appropriate level of staff and resources available across Scotland on Bonfire Night and can call upon the weight of our national network of appliances.“Unfortunately, at this time of year, we do see an increase in anti-social behaviour and, on occasion, attacks on our firefighters.

Attacks on the emergency services are both reckless and totally unacceptable. It is also a needless drain on resources.“We take a zero-tolerance approach and will always work with Police Scotland to identify those responsible.” Don't miss the latest news from the West Lothian Courier.
