Longridge ace Nicole Russell reflected on a tense finish to the 2021 campaign as she gears up for the new season, writes Jim Turner. She was involved in a thrilling finale as the Prostock Basic points championship at the Cowdenbeath Racewall ended up being decided on the final meeting of the year. She commented: “I had led both the National and track points championships from early on in the season but when we started the last race I had both Kielan Ogilvie and Martin Joy within striking distance.“The three of us all park beside each other in the pits and we help each other if needed but on the last day despite the importance of the meeting we were still laughing and joking with each other.”She added: “In the first heat, Kielan had a good finish but I had contact with another car and bent a wishbone.

In the second heat Kielan finished one place ahead of me which meant we were equal on points going onto the last race.“Kielan started ahead of me but I made up ground although I was two places behind.

I picked up a place on the last lap and closed right up on Kielan but he finished ahead of me.“When the points were totalled, he beat me in the track points by a solitary point but I had won the National Points and will race with a silver roof next season.”It was a fine finish to an impressive season which hadn’t gotten off to the smoothest of starts. She recalled: “At the start of the season we had our Scottish Championship and after a couple of good heat results on Saturday I was to start Sunday’s championship race from pole position.“I had been in a shunt on Saturday night but hadn’t realised that I had a bent axle and wishbone.
