United struggled to work their way back level but eventually did so on the stroke of half-time with a stunning Bruno Fernandes volley.
Referee Craig Pawson then awarded United a penalty in the second half as Harry Maguire went tumbling in the box, only to overturn it after consulting the VAR monitor.
And despite United pushing for a winner, it was West Brom who looked the more likely to score, as chances went begging on the break late on.
