When William Prunier was at Auxerre's academy as a teenager in France, he met a young Eric Cantona for the first time. The pair quickly became best friends and enjoyed multiple rebellious escapades together, making sure to push boundaries.
They often left the academy building past curfews, which involved passing the guard. Prunier and Cantona would jump through windows and make their way along the gutters, something they later described as 'stupid and reckless'. “It took Guy Roux [first-team manager] years to figure out what we were up to, luckily for us," Prunier told The Telegraph in 2019. “We did not really abide by the rules.

Cantona arrived on British shores to join Leeds in January 1992 and the forward made a stunning move to Manchester United later that year, whilst Prunier stayed across the channel.
