Guy Lodge Film Critic Trends in documentary-making have shifted radically since Nicolas Philibert’s “Être et Avoir” was a surprise arthouse hit two decades ago: That sweetly observational little film, following the ins and outs of a village elementary school over the course of a year, seems a quaintly modest proposition beside today’s more slickly immersive and narrativized nonfiction breakouts. If times have changed, however, Philibert has not. “On the Adamant,” his first feature in 10 years, finds him once more examining the human workings of a care-based institution from a reserved but compassionate distance, avoiding commentary and editorialization in favor of real-life character portraiture. It turns out to be the right approach for the institution under scrutiny: The Adamant, a day-care center in central Paris for adults with a variety of mental disorders, offering its visitors a range of therapy, education and cultural activity. The human subjects here are both expressive and highly vulnerable, open to the low-key, non-invasive presence of Philibert’s camera, and the film is content to be an undulating patchwork of their everyday moods and moments, rather than anything more strenuously conceptual. Suited to specialist distributors and streaming platforms, “On the Adamant” might not achieve the crossover success Philibert has found in the past, but it’s a warm reminder of his perceptive gifts: A premiere slot in Berlin’s main competition, alongside much sleeker, more formally ambitious fiction fare, effectively welcomes him back to the auteur leagues.

Charna Flam Long-time theatrical and commercial agent Samantha Botana-McConnell died on Feb. 18 due to natural causes in Santa Clarita, Calif. She was 79. For 30 years, Botana-McConnell was instrumental to the careers of numerous working actors in Hollywood. Botana-McConnell’s career began at the William Morris Agency, before she moved on to Wilhelmina in the 1970s as a commercial agent. By 1990, Botana-McConnell joined Gold Marshak, now known as TalentWorksLA. In 1995 she opened her own shingle, The Samantha Group, which she oversaw until 2005. In 2005 she partnered with Scott Stander & Associates until her retirement. Her retirement was spent focused on publishing and producing her late husband George McConnell’s work.

Zack Sharf Paris Hilton revealed in an interview with Glamour UK that she had an uncomfortable incident with Harvey Weinstein at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival when she was only 19 years old. Hilton was at the festival to attend the annual amfAR gala for AIDS research, which Weinstein was hosting that year. Hilton said she met Weinstein the day before the gala. “I was at lunch with my girlfriend and he came up to the table and was like, ‘Oh, you want to be an actress?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I really want to be in a movie,’” Hilton said. “I was a teenager, so I was impressed by him. I was like, ‘Oh my god, Harvey Weinstein is so cool!’ and he said, ‘Well, we should have a meeting. You can come up to my room and read scripts’… and I just didn’t want to go, so I never went.”

Ethan Shanfeld “Party Down” was an underdog show about underdogs — out-of-luck caterers who dreamed of one day rubbing shoulders with Hollywood rainmakers rather than serving them hors d’oeuvres. In the series, which ran on Starz for two seasons (2009-10), an ensemble cast led by Adam Scott and Ken Marino paraded around Los Angeles, working funerals, orgies and everything in between. The scrappy comedy got creative with a small budget, centering episodes around a corporate picnic or a one-man birthday party, which didn’t require hiring extras. Showrunner and co-creator John Enbom says the team wouldn’t pitch a “dog wedding,” for example, because they knew they “couldn’t afford to hire 20 animal trainers.”
