A BBC newsreader was caught in an embarrassing live on air moment as she gave the camera the middle finger - before realising she was on screen.

Maryam Moshiri was the anchor for Wednesday's BBC News at 12 on the world feed when the awkward blunder unfolded in front of lunchtime viewers.

As the title music ended and cut to the studio, chief presenter Maryam was shown with her head tilted to one side and pulling a face as she held her middle finger up at the camera in what appeared to be a joke that she clearly thought was not being broadcast.

She quickly snapped back into serious newsreader mode and began: "Live from London, this is BBC News," before going on to read the headlines about former prime minister Boris Johnson giving evidence at the Covid inquiry.
