Village community larder goes from strength to strength

Volunteers recently gave away food to nearly 300 people at a popular community larder.Lochwinnoch Community Larder regularly gives away food donated by local supermarkets to 100 people in the days it is open.It was set up last September and recently recorded its busiest ever week with nearly 300 service users visiting.Now it’s launched a community fundraising drive to help it expand what it gives away and support its team of dedicated volunteers.Tori Bell is the project officer for the charity LEAP, which runs the project which aims to tackle food poverty and stop waste going to landfill.She said: “We are very busy on the days we’re open.

People are coming from outwith the village, parts of Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire.“By targeting everybody, it’s a more dignified project and much more accessible for people who would otherwise find it difficult to step forward for help.”Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.The larder hopes to clad their current store, which is based in Lochhead Gardens, and replace the leaking roof as well as install plumbing and electricity.

This would improve the conditions for volunteers and also enable the larder to have a community fridge to give away chilled food.Tori added: We want to improve the working conditions for our volunteers and set up a community fridge.“At the moment we can only take ambient food from the supermarkets but there is so much fresh, good quality chilled food.
