Viewers who have watched the new ITV true crime drama Until I Kill You have taken to social media to point out a “crazy” problem that is highlighted in the series, and are demanding change.

During the series, based on real life events, London-based nurse Delia Balmer, as played by Anna Maxwell Martin, is subjected to days of torture by her former boyfriend John Sweeney as he holds her hostage in her own flat, and she is later almost killed by him when he returns, having been released on bail, and attacks her with an axe and a knife on her doorstep.

Following these events, Sweeney was arrested and charged with the attack, but only received a sentence of nine years for his crimes against Delia, which has shocked those watching the drama. “How can someone be given 4 life sentences and be eligible for parole in 9 years?

It’s crazy,” commented one viewer on social media, while another wrote: “Four life sentences. What?!?! Eligible for parole in nine years?!!!” A third said: “I’d like to say that victims of male violence are not treated like this anymore but sadly I’d be wrong.
