UK weather: Six days of snow ahead with heavy blizzards to 'cut off' areas for days

Heavy snow is expected over the next few days with almost 20 inches possible in places. Snow warnings have been issued for today and the next five days amid the threat of blizzards in some areas.

The worst of the weather is expected in Scotland, where the Met Office has issued an amber alert for Friday and Saturday. More than five inches of snow is possible across much of Scotland on Saturday, while as much as 20 inches could fall on higher ground.

Snow warnings are in force in northern Scotland and north-east and north-west England today. The Met Office has also warned these areas of England will see heavy rain today, alongside the east of England, Yorkshire and Northern Ireland.
