A five-day winter blizzard is set to hit the UK just in time for a possible white Christmas for some, according to new weather maps.This comes as the country recovers from the effects of Storm Darragh over the weekend.
Forecaster WXCharts predicts snow covering most of Scotland and northern England from 6am on Friday, 20 December, with Newcastle in the north east being the epicentre of the icy spell for much of Christmas week.
Meanwhile, southern regions including London and Plymouth are expected to experience heavy rainfall of up to 3mm/hour, with the downpours continuing into Saturday, 21 December.
By midday on Saturday, Scotland is predicted to record snow depths of around 20cm, particularly around Fort William and the northern Highlands, while light snowfall will continue throughout the Midlands and around Bradford, Leeds and York.The forecast also suggests that white flurries will continue along the north eastern coast, with Newcastle, Durham and Middlesbrough seeing an increase in settled snow on December 24 - with depths of up to 1.5cm.
