Holidaymakers in the Canary Islands are urged to “exercise caution” in coastal areas as yellow alerts have been issued by Spain’s weather agency Aemet.
The yellow warnings come into force in the early hours for Tuesday January 21 and last until midnight. The entire coastlines of El Hierroa, La Palma, La Gomera, Fuertevnetura and Lanzarote are covered by the warnings.
The northern coastlines of Tenerife and Gran Canaria are also under yellow alerts. Aemet warns of swells of “four to five metres.” Both residents and tourists in coastal arrears are “advised to exercise caution” and follow the colours of warning flags on beaches, Canarian Weekly reports.
Yellow flags warn bathers of moderate sea conditions, while red flags indicate that swimming is not allowed. People are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and avoid “unnecessary activities” near the coastline while the warnings are in force.
