The UK has the highest coronavirus death rate in Europe, new figures show. Data released by the Office for National Statistics gives a heartbreaking insight into the country's truth death toll.
The figures show that there were 29,648 Covid-19 deaths in England and Wales as of April 24, which is higher than Italy's current toll of 29,079.
This is compared to the 22,173 deaths of people in England and Wales testing positive for Covid-19 reported by the Department of Health & Social Care for the same period.
This shows that the UK's fatality rate is more than 30% higher than what has previously been reported. While the figures did also reveal that overall deaths were trending down in the week ending April 24, but fatalities in care homes
