Coronavirus hospital deaths have hit a two-month high in the UK as the daily toll increased by 29. England reported 28 fatalities and Scotland had one, and there were zero in Wales and Northern Ireland.

It is the biggest increase since 39 were announced across the UK on Saturday, July 11. There is usually a spike on Tuesdays due to a lag in reporting deaths at weekends.

By comparison, there were 16 deaths on September 15, 11 on September 8, 10 on September 1, 15 on August 25, and six on August 18, the lowest on a Tuesday since the lockdown was imposed in March.

The highest increase on a Tuesday was 854 on April 7, when the UK was in the initial peak of its outbreak. The latest figures came after Boris Johnson announced strict new lockdown
