UK coronavirus deaths rise by 150 as Saturday figure in huge jump on last week

A further 150 people have died from coronavirus over the past day in the UK. The jump in deaths is the biggest single-day increase since June 10 and far higher than last Saturday, when 81 were recorded.

Some 128 fatalities took place in England, with 15 in Scotland, five in Wales and two in Northern Ireland, bringing the UK's total death toll to 43,579.

A further 16,171 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, meaning the total number of diagnosed cases is now over 700,000.

Around half of England's population are currently under new restrictions as part of the Government's three-tier lockdown system.
