UK coronavirus cases rise above 17,000 in 24 hours as another 77 deaths are recorded

The number of deaths has also increased by 77 - up by seven on Wednesday but significantly higher than Monday's figure of 19.The government said that, as of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 17,540 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK - up by 3,378 on Wednesday.This takes the overall number of cases confirmed to 561,815.A further 77 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday.This brings the UK total to 42,592.Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies show there have now been 57,600 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.Figures also reveal that there are now 442 376.
