Summer signing Tyrell Malacia has explained how Erik ten Hag wants him to play at Manchester United. The left-back has had a solid first few outings for his new club and has fit into the set-up seamlessly.
He is expected to challenge Luke Shaw for his starting spot next season as Ten Hag attempts to implement his attacking philosophy.
Malacia was often seen bombing up the flank for former club Feyenoord, supporting his winger going forward. And he has continued this trait under Ten Hag, who expects his full-backs to overlap and underlap when required. Speaking to Sky Sports, Malacia agreed that he was in effect being asked to play as an extra midfielder. He said: “Yeah, that’s what the coach wants from me and at my former club, I played the same style so for me it’s easier to fit into this system.” Malacia also outlined how Ten Hag was in frequent dialogue with him in the build-up to his switch to United. “I spoke to him a lot, two or three times,” he said. “We had some good conversations about football, about myself and about him.
