A dad-of-two who vowed to lose five stone from his hospital bed has claimed £5,000 in winnings after he bet on whether he would shed the weight.

Chris Dempsey, 42, said he faced a “wake up call” when he was rushed to hospital with digestive condition diverticulitis weighing in at 22 stone.

Doctors who treated him during a four-day hospital stay in February warned him that his weight and lifestyle were putting his heath at risk.

So the 5ft 11 investment worker, whose diet of junk food and takeaways had caused him to pile on the pounds since his divorce in 2013, contacted bookmakers to put his money where his mouth is.
