Soldier Brian Wood’s immense bravery in battle earned him the Military Cross – but also caused him to be falsely accused of murder.
Ignoring the great danger to his own life, he led his outnumbered men in a bayonet charge against an enemy stronghold in Iraq in 2004.
The five-hour firefight, known as the Battle of Danny Boy, was one of the fiercest engagements in the Iraq War – with 28 insurgents killed and nine captured.
But being presented with one of Britain’s highest awards for gallantry was just the start of Brian’s story. Later, lawyers accused the former Colour Sergeant of war crimes – accusations that would hang over his life, and those of his family, for years.
