And now, her story has been turned into Netflix drama Self Made with Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer taking the lead role.
But just who was Madam CJ Walker? Originally born Sarah Breedlove in 1867, Madam CJ Walker was the first free born daughter of former African American slaves on a Louisianan cotton plantation.
Her father worked as a farm laborer, and her mother a laundress. Heartbreakingly, Madam CJ Walker lost both of her parents at the age of seven and moved in with her sister and brother-in-law, where she was abused and married Moses McWilliams at age 14 as a way to escape.
