A metal detectorist jailed for stealing Viking treasure worth up to £5.2million told a court he gambled away the money he made from selling the hoard.
George Powell admitted he failed to declare the 1,000-year-old collection of rare coins and jewellery after he got 'greedy'.
Giving evidence for the first time, the 40-year-old said he wanted to “become rich and get the payout”, with his ruthless ambition ultimately landing him behind bars.
Powell and fellow detectorist Layton Davies unearthed the Anglo-Saxon treasure at the farm near Leominster, Herefordshire in June 2015, the Mirror reports.
