Tragic nurse who lost cancer battle inspires 'phenomenal' fundraising total

More than £93,000 was raised at Irvine’s Race for Life last year.And now the call has gone out to Ayrshire people to sign up to take part in the 2022 event.Last year, a ‘phenomenal’ £93,296 was raised at Race for Life Irvine after more than 900 people took part.Many taking part were there in memory of Lynn Martin, a nurse who died from cancer just months before her wedding day.Lynn, who worked at Ayr Hospital, was only 54 when she died on December 12 2020, after seven months of treatment during the pandemic.She had already picked out her wedding dress and had been looking forward to marrying her partner Derek Thomson, of Irvine, at Western House Hotel, Ayr on June 12, 2021.Lynn’s family, including her children Debbie and Mhairi Martin, Adrienne and Darren Thomson and three grandchildren all took part in Race for Life Irvine 2021.An inspirational sign with Lynn’s picture took pride of place on the course.Lynn’s partner Derek, 56, is now calling for people’s support once again.He said: “A phenomenal amount was raised at Race for Life Irvine last year.“It was an emotional day for all who knew and loved Lynn.

We miss Lynn every single day.“As a family we’d like to thank everyone in the community who contributed towards making Race for Life Irvine such a success last year.

And we’d love for people to sign up again this year.“I’ve lost my parents, best friend and the love of my life to cancer.
