Police in Italy are searching for a tourist who clambered up on to the ancient ruins of Pompeii to pose for a selfie. A photo of the unknown woman, wearing a black top and pink shorts, shows her standing on top of the 2,000 year-old site on August 15.

Furious officials said not only did the woman risk damaging the historic monument but also put herself in danger. Thousands were killed when the city of Pompeii was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.

Massimo Osanna, the director-general of Italy's heritage sites, branded the woman's behaviour "deplorable". Now police are trying to track the woman down from images she had posted on social media.
