Ministers lavished millions of pounds in grants on marginal Tory seats before the last general election, official figures show.
A National Audit Office report today reveals how the Government selected 101 English towns to each benefit from a £25million boost to their economies.
But it meant that some of the most deprived parts of the country were left out of a £3.6bn scheme to revitalise town centres.
The figures show that 61 towns were chosen by ministers led by Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick - and all but one of these were either Tory-held seats or targets.
