parish councillor who said that slaves in the UK “had a better life than staying in Africa” has been suspended by the Tory party.

Elfan Ap Rees wrote a tweet in response to a BBC programme exploring the role of the slave trade in Bristol. The 78-year-old, who is a former deputy leader of North Somerset Council, is now a parish councillor for the area of Locking near Weston-super-Mare.

He has been suspended by the Conservative party and branded a “despicable racist” for his comment that was posted on May 27 before later being deleted.
