Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1969 or 1970) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Referred to as the "Songbird Supreme" by Guinness World Records, she is noted for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and signature use of the whistle register.
She rose to fame in 1990 after signing to Columbia Records and releasing her eponymous debut album, which topped the U.S. Billboard 200 for eleven consecutive weeks. Soon after, Carey became the only artist ever to have their first five singles reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, from "Vision of Love" to "Emotions".
Mariah Carey‘s die hard Lambs are familiar with the name Tommy Mottola. But her newer fans are about to get a lesson on her long-ago first marriage to the music mogul when the 50-year-old’s songbird’s memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey is released on September 29.
Tommy was 20 years her senior and literally her boss as head of Sony Music when they tied the knot in June 1993. He was one of the most powerful men in music, and helped launch Mariah’s career into the stratosphere with her 1990 debut album.
Tommy and Mariah’s coupling was controversial yet iconic. He helped make her a superstar, and it sure helped that she was literally married to the head of her record company.
