Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Timo Tjahjanto, the Indonesian genre film director who commands a fiercely loyal following, has dropped a trailer for his upcoming action thriller “The Shadow Strays.” Audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival will get the first look at the completed film as it screens in the festival’s Midnight Madness section.

It will then upload to Netflix on Oct. 17. According to a supplied synopsis, the film “follows the story of Codename 13, a young assassin who finds herself suspended after a mission gone wrong.

During her downtime, she bonds with Monji, a boy who recently lost his mother to a crime syndicate. When Monji disappears, 13 embarks on a quest to find him, even if it means going against her mentor and the organization she belongs to, The Shadows.” The film dives deep into themes of redemption and loyalty and is set against the backdrop of a brutal and unforgiving underworld. “Audiences can expect Tjahjanto’s signature style, with expertly choreographed action sequences,” Netflix said.

The film, which shot last year, has a cast that mixes emerging and veteran talents. Aurora Ribero stars as 13, the young assassin at the center of the story; Hana Malasan as Umbra, a veteran assassin and 13’s strict mentor; Ali Fikry as Monji, the young boy who becomes the catalyst for 13’s journey; Adipati Dolken as Prasetyo, a corrupt cop; and Andri Mashadi as Ariel, a sadistic crime boss.
