Ask people what Bury is famous for and a large proportion will instantly say 'the market'. But exactly a year ago 49 stallholders who traded from the vast indoor hall there were thrown into uncertainty after the discovery of RAAC in the roof.
Traders were given just a few hours notice that the building was to be closed and since that day the doors to the indoor hall have remained firmly shut for safety reasons.
Bury Council insist they will ensure the market thrives fior future generations but say the crumbling roof made of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete will cost at least £6m to repair.
Initially traders were left with nowhere to work in the run up to Christmas, with plans then made to relocate the majority to units within the Mill Gate shopping centre or to stalls on the three-day outdoor market.
