Hundreds of Manchester Evening News readers have paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. The death of The Queen was announced at 6.30pm this afternoon.

An official statement said she had passed away at Balmoral on September 8. It follows earlier statements from Buckingham Palace expressing concern about the 96-year-old's health. Hundreds of people paid tribute to The Queen, who was the country's longest reigning monarch. One commenter, Peter Lythgoe, said: "So very sad, no words can describe how this wonderful Lady will be missed.

RIP your Majesty." A post on the MEN's Facebook page about her death had already been shared by thousands of people and many of them expressed their love and respect from the former monarch.
