John and Tammy, who did not want to reveal their surname, had taken their two young children and six-month-old Labrador to Southport Beach on Monday (April 5).
The family spotted the animal off its lead as they arrived at the beach - and even joked about how dangerous it looked. But within minutes of stepping onto the sand, John described how the 'larger dog' had bounded over and sunk its teeth into Tammy's wrist.
