Simon Cowell's singing competition first began back in September 2004 and quickly became the highlight of Saturday night. Kate Thornton was the host of the very first series before Dermot O'Leary picked up the presenting baton from series four.

The original judging panel consisted of Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and Simon, and, in the years since, Cheryl, Nicole Scherzinger, Danni Minogue and Gary Barlow have all had a go.
