Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE (born 1 August 1965) is an English film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicals Cabaret (1994), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (2003). He directed an original West End stage musical for the first time with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013).
For directing the play The Ferryman, Mendes was awarded the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play in 2019.
Sam Mendes' 1917 enjoyed just one week at the top of the UK film charts. It slips down to the #2 spot this week having been knocked off by the return of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys For Life .
The third installment in the Bad Boys series is one of three new entries in the UK film chart's Top 10 along with Little Women , in at #4, and Bombshell at #8.
Films making way for the new entries are family-friendly flicks Spies In Disguise and Sonic The Hedgehog as well as Birds Of Prey featuring Margot Robbie as the vivacious Harley Quinn.
This week's surprise inclusion into the Top 40, coming in at the foot of the list is Kingsmen: The Golden Circle which knows Inbetweeners 2 out of the charts.
