A new four-part TV drama series, The Sixth Commandment, starts on BBC One tonight (Monday, July 17). The programme is based on a true story which the broadcaster describes as "one of the most complex and confounding criminal cases in recent memory".

With a script by Sarah Phelps - known for A Very British Scandal and The Pale Horse - the series explores the deaths of Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin in the village of Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire.

Peter and Ann were neighbours, had both worked in education, and were deeply religious. A student called Ben Field met Farquhar at the University of Buckingham and afterwards began to target both him and Ann with what the BBC describes as "extreme gaslighting".

Field - preying on Farquhar's need for companionship - moved into his victim's home and began to poison him by slipping alcohol and drugs into his food and cups of tea, leaving Farquhar to believe he was losing his grip on reality, the Radio Times says.
