More than 3m workers are set to receive a pay rise of up to £2,500 a year from April. The national minimum wage, national living wage and apprenticeship rate are all set to increase.
Legislation will be laid in Parliament by government ministers later today (February 4) to confirm the changes which are set to come into effect in two months' time.
This is the first time the National Living Wage - the minimum amount an employer must pay per hour for most workers - has taken into account the cost of living and inflation.
It also marks the first step towards creating a single minimum wage for all adults by aligning the National Minimum Wage for 18–20-year-olds and National Living Wage, putting an end to age-based wage discrimination.
