This has been a big week in Manchester’s town hall as a new boss was appointed - poached from just over the river in Salford.

Tom Stannard is set to ‘lead the city for the decade ahead’ - but who is he? A chartered surveyor, Tom Stannard is originally from London but moved to the north west for an undergraduate degree at Lancaster University in the mid-90s.

He then returned south for the first of his 27 years in local government. But he made his way back north in his thirties to take on the assistant chief exec job at Blackburn with Darwen council.
