After years of broken promises, the Government has finally confirmed North Manchester General Hospital will be rebuilt. The desperately-needed transformation was pledged by Boris Johnson in 2019 – yet it has taken more than half a decade to get the green light.
It follows a major Manchester Evening News campaign to rebuild the crumbling hospital, parts of which are more than 150-years-old.
We urged the government to commit to funding this once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a hospital that will save lives and be fit for the next 150 years.
And now at last, it’s happening – with at least £1bn in funding, and an official start date of 2027.
