A doctor has revealed a lesser-known red flag symptom of dementia that can be found in your throat. Dementia is a condition that affects almost a million people across the UK and can be debilitating for those suffering from any form of it.

While some of us are familiar with memory loss and difficulty performing every day tasks as signs of dementia, there are some lesser-known symptoms that could indicate the condition.One such "unusual" symptom was highlighted by Dr Ahmad Khundakar, a senior lecturer in biomedical science at Teesside University.

The doctor told the Express that having trouble swallowing can be a sign of dementia.Medically known as dysphagia, having issues swallowing can occur because of damage to the parts of the brain responsible for movement and coordination.

People with dementia may experience muscle weakness, coordination problems, and reduced throat sensation, which can make swallowing difficult.The Alzheimer's Society has supported this information as the charity said: "As dementia progresses, swallowing difficulties (called dysphagia) become more common, although they will vary from person to person.
