Fergus Suter started life as the son of a humble stonemason from Glasgow. By the time of his death in Blackpool 1916 he had played a crucial role in helping to establish football as the game we know it today.
Suter’s role in the development of football is part of Netflix ’s new period drama, The English Game, written by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.

For the next two years Suter balanced his life of being a stonemason during the week and a footballer at the weekend, sometimes playing English clubs such as Darwen FC and Blackburn Rovers.
