It's more popular than Champagne – not to mention far more purse-friendly. And it has fewer calories than wine. So it's no wonder that more and more of us are turning to Prosecco as our tipple of choice.
In fact, an estimated 412 million bottles were consumed worldwide in 2020, an estimated increase of 36% over five years. And Prosecco is becoming so popular, it's not just a drink, but something of a lifestyle – there's Prosecco advent calendars, Prosecco bath bombs, Prosecco socks and even a Prosecco festival.
Yet it seems you can have too much of a good thing, as Prosecco has become so popular, there have been times when suppliers have almost run out.
During what was dubbed the Great Prosecco Shortage of 2016, Sainsbury's withdrew all bottles from its shelves following exceptionally high demand for the fizzy stuff.
