dailyrecord.co.ukThe Scottish Government would need to plug a £15million blackhole to get Scotland matches on free-to-air TV.First Minister Humza Yousaf yesterday announced he’ll be asking Westminster to add games played by Steve Clarke’s national team to the list of sporting events which must be screened without cost to viewers.
The Holyrood boss has decided it’s time Scotland fixtures were included among the so-called ‘Crown Jewels’ barred by law from exclusive coverage on pay TV channels.Games played by the national team at the World Cup and European Championships are currently included on the list.
But Yousaf’s plans would mean qualifying clashes involving Clarke’s side - as well as those for Pedro Martínez Losa’s Scottish women’s national team - would also have to be broadcast free of charge to the nation.
That would give them the same protected status as events like the finals of both the Scottish and FA Cups, as well as Wimbledon, the Olympics and the Grand National.However, the First Minister will have to explain to SFA bosses how he’ll cover the cash Hampden currently rake in from their TV deals.
